About the Business / Owners: Hyperspace Comics & Games is owned and operated by Jonathan & Stephanie Mallett. After many years of searching for the right location, Hyperspace opened May 3rd, 2017 at #110, 319 McLeod Ave in Spruce Grove. Prior to having the store they attended small comic and collectible shows selling back issues and key comics.
Stephanie says, of their experience “Hyperspace Comics had been a dream of ours for a long time. Our hope was that it would fill a huge gap for those people who love comics, games and collectibles, but were having to drive a long way just to get them. We wanted Hyperspace to help introduce what we love to a whole new generation of people in the area who have never visited a comics and games shop before. So here we are now, seeing so many excited faces who are enjoying being in a local store that loves what they love, and for many others that are now experiencing this type of shop for the 1st time!”
Ripley Construction; Leduc, Alberta
Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/ripleyconstruction
Reason they were nominated: John Ripley is a very humble man who cares deeply for his employees and community. Like many small business owners he takes on significant risks and has faced many challenges most recently with the devastating fires in Fort McMurray.
About the Business / Owners: A trusted contractor, Ripley Construction caters to the needs of home owners, business owners and the municipality. Our general contracting and concrete services are ideally structured to meet the needs of the commercial and private client base. Ripley Construction is locally owned and operated. In his own words, John says, “We had built our business to roughly 15 employees and had managed to get on solid ground and start saving some money. Oil prices tanked but we had a plan and were weathering the slow down well. Then entered the beast a devastating fire that burned large portions of the city. The entire city of Fort McMurray was evacuated. Every contract we had was canceled or suspended. We luckily were able to find a little work in the Edmonton area and kept our core employees working. We didn’t cover our own wages or overhead as we still continued to pay our employees Ft Mac wages. We didn’t think asking people living in trailers with nothing more than the clothes on there backs to take a pay cut was good business.”

Pet Foods Etc.; Stony Plain, Alberta
Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/Pet-Foods-Etc-202790246430181
Reason they were nominated: I discovered this business this summer. I needed a good quality dog food as my dog was having some major issues. I did some research on my own, but was still needing some assistance in finding the right food for my dog. Cynthia was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I ended up talking to her for about an hour and she “educated” me about different kinds of foods available. There was no pressure to buy a certain product but she helped me make an informed choice. The food ended up solving the issues that my dog had. I recently went in again and asked about another issue with my dog. I was once again pointed in the right direction by one of the staff members and yet again the recommendation had excellent results. It doesn’t hurt that when you walk in you are greeted by a couple friendly dogs either! This business sells quality products and has excellent, knowledgeable staff.
